Dr. David Morens, a former senior adviser at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under Dr. Anthony Fauci, has officially pleaded guilty to charges connected to concealing federal records during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Morens pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit offenses and to defraud the United States. The Scheme: He admitted to knowingly hiding and destroying federal records to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and to using his personal email to discuss COVID-19 origins and research grants.
Illegal Gratuities: As part of the plea, Morens also admitted to accepting illegal gratuities, such as wine and meals.
Penalties: He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for November.
